(W)ord is a collaboration between Scottish and Norwegian artists started by Imi Maufe and David Faithfull in 2017. 8 artists from the two countries were invited on a pair of residencies; the first on Mull on 2017 and the second in Norway at Tjuvika in 2019.
The time on these residencies was spent in cultural exchange of words and traditions and names and experiences. It was agreed that our collective research and artworks would be sythesised into a travelling exhibition-in-a-box which would travel throughout Scotland and Norway to be unpacked and exhibited in a variety of settings.
It has since been exhibited at USF Bergen, An Tobar in Mull, Society of Scottish Artists Edinburgh, Taigh Chearsabhagh North Uist and Duncan of Jordanstone college of art and design among others.
My contribution to the box are two walked canvases which had been dragged around Mull and Tjuvika respectively to absorb the soils of these places. These are named after the proto-map “rutters” which were used by early explorers as sensory guides for their expeditions. Alongside these are two maps which track the journeys taken by these canvases around Norwegians and Scottish coastlines.
